The PlantGuy Tips

Expert advice from GardenFix for managing lawns and landscapes in the unique St. Louis climate.

Tip #1: The July Mowing Height

In STL's humid summers, never cut your grass short! Raise your mower deck to 3.5 or 4 inches in July and August. Taller grass shades the roots, reducing water stress and stopping weed germination.

Tip #2: Taming Missouri Clay Soil

Dense clay soil is common here. Instead of fighting it, work with it. We recommend core aeration every fall to reduce compaction, followed by overseeding to introduce hardier fescue varieties.

Tip #3: Choose Native for Low-Maintenance

Want a beautiful garden without constant watering? Use native Missouri plants like Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) or Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia). They survive our erratic weather and support local pollinators!
